Panaderia 2 Hermanos

Tortas are Mexican sandwiches that are usually filled with meat and other yummy things.  They are often made with the standard bolillo or telera breads, which sometimes get soft from the fillings.  Panaderia 2 Hermanos has been making only one kind of bread that is perfect for tortas, a ciabatta-type loaf for 10 years.

There is no sign on the street, and no sign on the building.  You have to know it is there to find it, but it's worth the trip.  Each loaf of this bread tastes a bit like sourdough and is hearty enough to stand up to the messiest ingredients.  Each loaf is large, enough to make two or three tortas.

Less than 100 feet from the imposing and rusting US border fence in Tecate is a hotel and meeting complex called Santuario Diegueño.  Señor Sabrosisimo recently attended a meeting there at their signature restaurant, Asao.  The experience was excellent.
